Education drove the design for the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) building on Washington State University’s campus: a cutting-edge research facility that has a global impact on the understanding and evolving knowledge of both animal and human health. Scientific illustrations and DNA sequencing are the backbone of the visual style of the environmental graphics program.
The graphics and wayfinding system educates visitors about the scientific research done within the walls of WADDL that saves the lives of animals and humans through the detection of disease while also highlighting the lab’s location at WSU and the beautiful Palouse region. Large-scale graphics are integrated into wall surfaces, wood paneling, and glazing at key destinations including laboratories and transitional points like the feature staircase. The graphics celebrate the site and the commitment to the betterment of animal and human health.
The layered graphics program features illustrative animal and scientific imagery alongside a colorful grid pattern reminiscent of DNA structure and the Palouse's rolling hills. This design not only emphasizes WADDL’s commitment to understanding animal health but also engages visitors in the scientific journey. The vibrant environmental graphics throughout WADDL inspire and educate everyone who enters, showcasing the essential work conducted within this state-of-the-art facility.
