Wrapping around two oxygen tanks at Swedish Medical Center is the dynamic graphic kinegram installation inspired by the elemental qualities of air and the act of breathing. As passersby move past the structure, the site’s blue vertical security fence slats interact with the graphic bubble pattern behind, creating an animated sequence and the illusion of moving air and water.
The design of the graphic installation at Swedish Medical Center centers on two key questions: how to honor the vital role of oxygen in our health and environment, and how to introduce playfulness to this serious subject. When the large oxygen tanks were relocated near a prominent intersection in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood, the security fence became an opportunity for a unique experience. By employing moiré and stereograph patterns, the dynamic installation embodies Swedish’s wellness brand while fulfilling functional design requirements.
The resulting kinegram installation uses the vertical slats of the security fence interacting with a vibrant abstract pattern behind them to create the illusion of movement for passersby. This design conveys the essence of breathing, showcasing the connection between oxygen and wellness through visual concepts like bubbles and waves. The bold, colorful graphic not only meets ventilation needs but also transforms the environment into a more inviting space. It captivates passersby, offering moments of surprise and wonder as they engage with the animated installation.
