Today, we’re reflecting on our experience in September at the 2024 SEGD Conference in Dallas! Studio SC Design Director Jemma Radick and Project Director Cory Binau attended the conference and came back feeling connected, inspired, and excited to share their experience with the team. Long-standing members of SEGD, Jemma and Cory have both been attending the conferences for many years and are always energized by the thought-provoking discussion, workshops, tours, and networking.

At this year’s conference they connected with peers, mentored emerging designers, and engaged with partners and fabricators to share knowledge and exchange ideas.

Cory found inspiration during the AT&T Discovery District tour – an immersive large-scale digital experience showcasing curated multi-media artists. The tour offered a behind-the-scenes look at how sound, light, and media were combined to shape this dynamic entertainment district, featuring a nine-story media wall and a responsive globe structure (compound curves for days!). Hearing firsthand from the owner and design team about their approach to community activation sparked new ways for our team to think about engaging all the senses in our work.

For the third consecutive year, Jemma facilitated the Design Improv Workshop – a high-energy, interactive creative challenge that pushes the boundaries of conventional thinking. This year’s prompt was to interpret Dallas’s public artwork The Eye into an interactive museum experience through the lens of vision, observation, perception, and symbolism. Using only the materials supplied, each small team took a unique approach to creating a user experience. We are always amazed at the creativity and enthusiasm the participants bring to the challenge; using craft paper construction dioramas, pipe cleaners, post its, plans, and sketches, they led us through a journey of introspection, observation, and exploration. Participants left energized, inspired, and in the company of new connections forged in the heat of competition.

All in all, it was three days of nerding out with our friends in the industry, connecting, learning, and laughing! We are already looking forward to next year’s conference in San Francisco.
